Alison Crowther - The Woodcarvers Studio Film

The film charts the progress, through the seasons, of 4 projects that were underway from summer 2023 until January 2024. One notable project is the reception desk for the Avenue of Stars in Los Angeles, which starts out as a wind-felled veteran oak from Petworth Park sitting in the studio yard, and by the end of the film is inside the workspace starting it’s new life.

Behind The Scenes

DETAILS

JP wanted to show the detail of the wood carvings featuring the grain, natural rings, radial structures (medullary rays) and the unique features of each piece of oak to give the audience a sense of the texture.

CREATIVE PROCESS

During the making of the film we followed Alison as she turned a wind-felled veteran oak from Petworth Park into a reception desk for Avenue of Stars in Los Angeles. We first see the large untouched log sitting in the studio yard and by the end of the film it has been fully carved and delivered overseas to begin its new life.

PROJECTS

We captured Alison working on projects of all sizes, some commisioned and others self initiated.

METHOD

Close up shots of drawings from Alisons sketch books offer glimpses of her creative process.

FEATURES

Alisons carving tools are an important element of her work and feature in the film not only in Alisons hands as she carves but also when she takes care of them and while they rest..
